Qatar breaks FIFA’s 92-year record in World Cup as host nation

Qatar has made a new record at the FIFA World Cup after losing their opening game. They lost 2-0 to Ecuador on Saturday night in Al Kor.

The goals were scored by Enner Valencia. Both goals were scored in the first half.

It is now in history that Qatar as hosts of the FIFA World Cup has lost the opening game. Previously, all the hosts of the Mundial have either won or drew their opening games.

The record for host nation has stood for 92 years from the time the World Cup started with 13 teams.

The World Cup started in 1930 with Uruguay winning the first match as host. They beat their neighbours Argentina 4-2 in Montevideo. Russia was the last host that got their results in 2018 before Qatar broke the record last Saturday.

The Russians beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening match of the last World Cup at the Luzinski Stadium in Moscow.

Qatar is also the first Arab country and the first country in the Middle East to host the tournament. Their hosting has been marked with a number of controversies from the Western countries.
