The Government has announced that the proposed renaming of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport forms part of a broader strategy to re-establish a national airline.
The move, according to officials, is aimed at repositioning Ghana’s aviation sector within the West African sub-region.
The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, said the renaming represents a strategic reset rather than a symbolic exercise.
Speaking at the launch of the 40th anniversary of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority on February 16, he stressed that the rebranding of the country’s main international gateway is foundational to plans to revive a national carrier.
“We are working hard, as I said, to rename the Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. And we believe that this will be successful. And when it is done, it will now create space and room for us to be able to re-establish the national air carrier that we Ghanaians all yearn for,” Mr Nikpe stated.
He added that the new national airline is expected to commence operations in the coming months.
The Government had earlier announced on February 3, 2026, its intention to effect the name change through legislation.
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, indicated that the necessary bill will be presented to Parliament by the Minister for Transport as part of efforts to give legal backing to the proposed rebranding and broader aviation reforms.
