Joseph Kobla Wemakor, the Executive Director of Human Rights Reporter Ghana (HRRG), has added another milestone to his illustrious career as he was conferred with the prestigious Global Humanitarian and Ministerial Excellence Award 2024.

Recognized for his tireless efforts in human rights advocacy and social impact, Wemakor also received an honorary doctorate from the International Kingdom University in Margate, Florida, USA.

This honor highlights his exceptional work in championing human rights, empowering communities, and contributing to global humanitarian causes.

A Journey Rooted in Advocacy

In an interview, Wemakor reflected on his journey, tracing the origins of HRRG to 2019.

“The Human Rights Reporter Ghana is an initiative of young lawyers and activists who came together to tackle human rights violations and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030,” he said.

Wemakor elaborated on HRRG’s impactful projects, such as the nationwide campaign against teenage pregnancy and the abuse of tramadol, which has reached over 16,000 individuals, including children and women in rural communities.

Their efforts also focused on addressing kidnapping, sensitizing communities across the country’s border regions.

“By today, we’ve saved lives, transformed communities, and complemented government efforts to make kidnapping a thing of the past,” he remarked.

Recognitions and Achievements
HRRG’s advocacy has earned multiple accolades, including a nomination for the Africa Rising Activism Award in 2020, where the organization placed fourth continent-wide. More recently, in 2023, they achieved recognition on the global stage, representing Africa in a global human rights forum.

“We’ve come a long way, and this award is a testament to the impact we’re making,” Wemakor said.

“It motivates us to continue ensuring that rights are respected, protected, and promoted.”

A Bright Future for Human Rights Advocacy
The Global Humanitarian and Ministerial Excellence Award 2024 and the honorary doctorate underscore Wemakor’s relentless dedication to human rights and social advocacy.

With HRRG continuing its critical work, Wemakor remains committed to driving change, empowering the vulnerable, and promoting justice.

“I owe this recognition to everyone who has supported me along the way,” Wemakor concluded. “Together, we’re creating a better future.”

This award not only celebrates Wemakor’s achievements but also shines a spotlight on the critical work being done in Ghana and across Africa to uphold human rights and foster sustainable development.
