Ghana’s national 100m record holder, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, opened his 2026 campaign in spectacular fashion with a blistering 6.54 seconds in the men’s 60m at the Jarvis Scott Invitational Championship in Lubbock, Texas.
The time marked both a season’s best and a lifetime best for the 28-year-old, who turned professional this year. His performance comfortably met the qualifying standard for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Pomerze, Poland.
Saminu produced a sharp reaction off the blocks, executed an aggressive drive phase and powered through the finish with impressive top-end speed against a strong international field, underlining his readiness for the global stage.
It was the standout display in a strong overall outing by Ghanaian athletes. James Dadzie clocked 6.62 in the men’s 60m, while Anita Afrifa posted 7.43 in the women’s event.
Deborah Acheampong ran 23.95 in the women’s 200m, with Asana Hamish and Sandra Appiah recording 24.71 and 25.24 respectively. Hamish later returned to clock 54.70 in the 400m, as Appiah finished in 55.49.
