Former Barcelona Forward, Samuel Eto’o, has expressed his excitement Barcelona talismanic forward, Lionel Messi, said he’s staying at the Catalan club for at least one more season.
The 33-year-old Argentine had communicated to Barcelona last month via a burofox of his intention to leave the club after the club’s horrible 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
But Messi communicated his decision to stay at the club last Friday in an interview with Goal.com.
The Cameroonian legend said he’s happy his former teammate is staying. He further stated the club needs more players, who are familiar with its DNA to flourish again.
“Messi is like my son. He has stayed and so I’m happy,” Eto’o, who spent five years at Camp Nou between 2004 and 2009, told reporters at a La Liga promotional event.
“But the heart of this team needs more Barcelona-style players, players who are tiki-taka, not box to box.”
The 39-year-old double treble winner with Barcelona and Inter Milan stated in an earlier interview that had Lionel Messi left, then the name of the club be changed.
“I love Messi like he was my own son, I want the best for him. Barcelona is Messi and I think if Messi decides to leave, we’ll have to change the name of the club”, Eto’o told Argentine TV channel TyCSports.
“We are lucky in that at Barcelona, we have the best player in the world, and of all-time, we have to do everything possible to ensure he finishes his career at Barcelona.”
