Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, has rejected an apology made on his behalf by Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh following his expulsion from Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin.
The incident arose during discussions on Supreme Court appointments, with Dr Afriyie disputing the Speaker’s authority.
Speaker Bagbin ordered Dr. Afriyie’s removal, citing his disrespectful remarks. Despite Annoh-Dompreh’s apology, Dr Afriyie maintained his innocence, asserting he neither insulted nor disrespected the Speaker.
In an interview, Dr Afriyie affirmed, “He apologized on my behalf. He doesn’t have my permission to do that, but you can put this one on record. We’ll take it everywhere. I haven’t done anything wrong, so why should I apologize? So far, I haven’t done anything wrong. I haven’t insulted the Speaker; I haven’t disrespected him. What happened? Where’s the disrespect?”
The controversy underscores tensions within Ghana’s Parliament over procedural disputes, highlighting ongoing legislative conduct and protocol debates.
