Several fishermen at Senya Breku in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region were attacked at sea by armed gunmen who seized their outboard motors and generator sets, leaving them stranded and helpless.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, when the victims, who had gone fishing overnight, were returning to shore.
According to reports, the assailants, operating from a black boat, opened fire during the raid and targeted fishermen in seven canoes. The attackers made away with valuable equipment, including outboard motors and generator sets, after the assault.
The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, confirmed the attack in an interview with Citi News.
“There was an armed attack at sea. Our fishermen usually go out at night and return early in the morning. Those who went toward the Nyanyano side were reportedly attacked,” she said.
“They were robbed of their outboard motors and generator sets by a black boat. I cannot disclose the nationality of the attackers. Investigations are ongoing,” the MP added.
She noted that security agencies have since been mobilised to respond to the situation.
“The military, the IGP has also dispatched a military marine police unit to help. So the navy is helping, and the marine police are also helping us,” Tetteh-Agbotui stated.
