The Shama District Assembly has announced plans to fast-track a major education infrastructure programme this year, allocating 80 percent of its District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) resources to classroom construction and the completion of stalled school projects.
District Chief Executive Paul Dentu said the Assembly received its first-quarter DACF disbursement of GH¢2,632,374 and will prioritise new and unfinished facilities to improve learning conditions across the district. The decision follows a national directive to channel 80 percent of DACF funds directly to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to accelerate local development.
Mr. Dentu said the Assembly’s education agenda includes the construction of a six-unit classroom block at Anto, a two-unit kindergarten block with ancillary facilities at Bosomdu Krobo, and a new JHS block at Awona Beach.
He added that work will resume on abandoned school buildings at Komfueku, Shama and Essaman, aligning spending with the government’s guidance to prioritise stalled projects. The DCE described the interventions as immediate steps to reduce classroom overcrowding and to create safe, permanent learning spaces for pupils in the district.
Addressing performance concerns, Mr. Dentu linked the Shama District’s weak Basic Education Certificate Examination results to parental disengagement, low teacher motivation, and poor learning environments.
To tackle these drivers, the Assembly plans to introduce a Teachers’ Award Scheme and an educational support programme for brilliant but needy students, measures intended to boost morale and widen access to opportunities. He said investing in both infrastructure and targeted incentives will raise standards and encourage greater community participation in education.
Community leaders welcomed the announced projects but urged careful oversight and timely execution to ensure value for money and lasting impact. The Assembly has committed to transparent procurement and regular public updates on project milestones to build trust and ensure that funds translate into classroom improvements.
With the new investments and accompanying support measures, the Shama District aims to strengthen foundational education and improve outcomes ahead of the next examination cycle.
