Nigerian singer Simi has addressed the backlash that followed the resurfacing of old tweets from 2012, which have triggered criticism online amid ongoing conversations about rape culture and the rape allegation involving Mirabel.
The controversy intensified after some users shared screenshots of her past posts, questioning their context and intent.

In a statement, Simi explained that she was 23 at the time, living at home and helping at her mother’s daycare while pursuing her music career. She said her tweets reflected everyday experiences and were never written with harmful intent. “Nothing I tweeted was from perversion,” she stated, stressing that her words were now being “twist[ed]… to fit false narratives.” She added that while she was open and expressive as a young woman on social media, she has “never been depraved” and has consistently spoken against rape and sexual assault.
The singer also revealed that her team has begun deleting some of the old posts due to their sensitivity for her family, although she was initially reluctant to remove them. Reaffirming her stance, she said, “I said stop raping women. I stand by it,” maintaining that her advocacy against sexual violence is not performative but a reflection of who she is, as online debate around her continues.
