Popular Ghanaian filmmaker, Socrate Safo, has admitted that he and other stakeholders contributed to the decline of the Ghanaian movie industry, which continues to face challenges today.

He made this known during his remarks at the press preview of award-winning Nigerian producer, Frank Rajah Arase’s VIRGIN of The TRONE, held at the Silverbird Cinema Accra Mall on March 24, 2026.

Socrate did not shy away from taking responsibility, saying;

“I was part of the people who destroyed or contributed to the downfall of the Ghanaian movie industry. I know what we did and I know what we have to undo. And it will take just 24hrs,” he stated.

He, however, clarified that their actions at the time were not deliberate but driven by a lack of knowledge, emphasizing that the current state of the industry is largely a result of decisions taken out of ignorance in the past.

“Most of the things we did were out of ignorance, but stupidity is keeping us in today,” he added.

Despite acknowledging that the consequences are now clear, he expressed concern that the same mistakes are still being repeated.

“Even though we have realized the consequences, stupidity is still keeping us from learning,” he stressed.

The producer’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about how to revive the Ghanaian film industry and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders.

The press preview formed part of activities ahead of the premiere of the movie by Frank Rajah Arase, marking his return to the filmmaking scene after eight years.
