Spain secured their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stage with an impressive performance against Italy in Gelsenkirchen.
Despite dominating the game and creating many chances, they narrowly won 1-0 thanks to an own goal by Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori in the second half.
Spain played with their characteristic style, moving the ball with intensity and creativity. Italy, however, relied heavily on goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made several crucial saves to keep Spain at bay.
Alvaro Morata’s header led to the own goal by Calafiori after nearly an hour of Donnarumma’s impressive goalkeeping. Italy struggled to respond and failed to threaten Spain’s defence throughout the match, managing just a few touches in Spain’s box and no shots on target in the first half.
Despite Spain’s dominance, they were unable to capitalize on all their chances. Nico Williams and youngster Lamine Yamal impressed with their attacking play, but missed opportunities prevented Spain from extending their lead.
Italy’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage now hinge on their upcoming match against Croatia, while Spain, with two wins out of two and no goals conceded, have already secured their spot in the last 16.
