Organised Labour has called off the indefinite strike of Public Sector Workers declared last Friday, 12th July, 2024 to protest the sale SSNIT 60 per cent stake in four hotels.
Announcing the end of the strike, after an emergency meeting held on Monday, 15th July, 2024, the Secretary- General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, said organised labour received a letter from SSNIT on the same day the strike was declared, terminating the sale of the hotels by SSNIT.
“All workers are requested to resume work on Tuesday, 16th July, 2024.”
Dr Baah however, said Organised Labour had given SSNIT one month to address all challenges relating to pensions.
The strike significantly disrupted operations across various sectors, including the Judiciary and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital on Monday, July 15, 2024.
The strike was declared on Friday, July 12, 2024 over the intended sale of SSNIT’s 60 percent shares in some four Hotels to Rock City Hotel owned by Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong.
Despite SSNIT’s cancellation of the sale, the labour groups are proceeding with their strike and are now demanding that the Board of SSNIT be dissolved.
Reports indicate that some public bus systems were interrupted as some workers were uncertain about the strike and stayed at hope, while some who came to work had some difficulties getting vehicles coming into the city.
At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Manhyia Government Hospital Doctors have abandoned Consulting rooms with patients seeking healthcare left to their fate.
OPD services have also been halted at both hospitals.
