Head of News at Channel One TV/Citi FM, Vivian Kai Lokko, has encouraged journalism students at the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ) to take initiative and begin reporting, even before landing formal media roles.

Speaking during a guest lecture with Level 300 students, on Thursday July 10, she emphasised that in today’s digital era, aspiring journalists don’t need expensive equipment or newsroom access to begin practicing.

“We are now in a digital world so if you do not have the opportunity to start practicing journalism, do it on your own. You only need your mobile phones,” she said.

She also stressed the value of time management and well-rounded reporting, urging students to use whatever time and tools they have to produce meaningful stories.

“Even with little time, a journalist can tell a powerful story that captures all sides,” she added.

Her message resonated with the students, many of whom expressed appreciation for the practical advice and inspiration. The lecture, initiated by Desmond Lamptey, In-Depth Journalism lecturer, was part of an ongoing effort to bridge the gap between academic training and real-world journalism.
