A student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) has been stabbed during disturbances linked to the ongoing Eastern Regional Inter-Schools Sports Festival (commonly known as Interco) in Koforidua.
The victim, identified as Jerome Appiah, was allegedly attacked by a group of Form Two students from New Juaben Senior High School (NJUASCO) while eating waakye on his way back to campus. He sustained a deep machete wound to the shoulder, resulting in heavy bleeding.
Police from the Eastern Regional Command swiftly intervened, rushing the injured student to the Eastern Regional Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and reported to be in stable condition.
In response to the incident, Koforidua SECTECH Headmaster Emmanuel Frimpong Benjabeng, together with teachers, hurried to the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre, the main venue of the sports festival, to calm agitated students and avert potential retaliatory violence from SECTECH pupils.
While the headmaster was engaging with New Juaben South Municipal Education Director Mustapha Haruna Appiah to address the situation, further unrest erupted.
Reports indicate that clashes involving students from Nsutam Senior High Technical School led to stone-throwing, during which a teacher sustained a head injury from a flying stone.
The New Juaben South Municipal Education Director expressed deep concern over the recurring violence at such events and urged police and festival organisers to launch a thorough investigation while beefing up security measures to forestall additional incidents.
