By Nicholas Osei-Wusu

Chairman of the National Media Commission, Mr. Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, has advised members of the public and in particular, workers to take full responsibility for their health and subject themselves to routine medical checkups.

This will help them know in time about any hidden illness and seek prompt medical care to prevent complications or untimely deaths.

Citing the unfortunate demise of the MP for Kumawu who had early on actively participated in parliamentary proceedings, the NMC Chairman emphasized the importance of regular medical checkups as a means of preserving one’s life.

Mr. Ayeboafo gave the advice in Kumasi at a ceremony to round up Garden City Radio and TV’s ‘Heritage Month’.

Garden City Radio and Television are the Ashanti region’s subsidiaries of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC.

During the ‘Heritage Month’ of March, both Garden City Radio and Television, through news bulletins, projected the customs, traditions and culture of the Asantes through their dressings and prioritization of the local Twi dialect while airing stories from the Centre for National Culture and the chieftaincy using selected traditional leaders.

To round up the month-long commemoration, the stations organized a food bazaar and free health screening exercise for both the staff and members of the general public.

The female staff of the Corporation prepared various local cousines such as ‘fufu’, ‘ampesie’, ‘tuo zaafi’ and ‘mpanpa’.

The free health screening was in partnership with HopeXchange Medical Centre at Apire, a catholic medical facility.

The Medical Centre deployed a 25-member clinical team that screened patrons of their Body Mass Index or B.M.I., Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Prostate Specific Antigen, PSA for men, Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer and general medical consultancy services.

Patrons of the exercise who came from far and near, ranged from the young to adults with one of them from Angloga being both speech and sight impaired.

Incidentally, among the clinical team from the HopeXchange Medical Centre were specially trained clinicians to give the required care to the special needs patient.

At a brief ceremony, the General Manager of the HopeXchange Medical Centre, Dominic Osei Kofi, assured of the preparedness of the Centre to partner any institution willing to bring healthcare to the doorstep of especially the vulnerable at no cost towards promoting good health among the citizenry.

The Acting Ashanti Regional Director of GBC, Thomas Nsowah Adjei, emphasized emphasized local food, language and dressings remain the most important identities of any group of people. He entreated members of the public to also always take advantage of any health screening exercise to be abreast of their health status.

The Chairman of the National Media Commission, Mr. Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, expressed regret that some people die from preventable causes sometimes because of their failure to undertake regular medical checkups.

He reminded staff of the GBC of their status as workers of a public broadcaster and for that matter, a national outfit which requires of them to always take a neutral role in presenting national issues using decorous language while ensuring that panel discussions on their platforms are balanced and civil.

Garden City Radio and Television served each of the patrons of the free health screening soft drinks to round up the celebration.
