John Dramani Mahama, the President-elect of Ghana, has addressed the nation with a message of gratitude, hope, and determination after being declared the winner of the 2024 election.
Delivering an acceptance speech, he acknowledged the struggles faced during his political journey and pledged to work tirelessly to rebuild the nation.
In his address, Mr. Mahama extended heartfelt thanks to his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, describing her as “exemplary and inspirational”.
He praised her for breaking barriers as Ghana’s first female Vice President-elect, saying, “You have opened the door of opportunity for many of our female citizens. Today, Ghana has made history.”
The President-elect also expressed gratitude to his campaign team, party agents, and countless volunteers who worked tirelessly to secure victory. “Your sacrifices and hard work have made this possible,” he said.
Reflecting on the challenges of the past eight years, Mr. Mahama described the period as some of Ghana’s darkest, marked by governance failures and crises. He emphasised the people’s resolve to demand better leadership, stating, “This election shows that Ghanaians have little tolerance for bad governance and are willing to take decisive action when it matters most.”
Mr. Mahama assured Ghanaians of his commitment to governance reforms aimed at rebuilding trust between citizens and leaders. He promised to take bold measures to address the country’s economic and social challenges, emphasising the need to create opportunities for all.
“We must create sustainable, well-paying jobs, ensure access to affordable housing, healthcare, and clean water, and build a Ghana that works for everyone,” he said. He highlighted his vision for a “24-hour economy initiative” to drive progress and improve the lives of all citizens.
Concluding his address, Mr. Mahama called for unity, urging all Ghanaians to work together for a brighter future. “This beautiful, resilient, and resource-rich country is for all of us. We must dream, work, and thrive together,” he said.
With a clear mandate from the people, Mr. Mahama pledged to lead with humility, transparency, and a focus on restoring Ghana’s position as the “Black Star of Africa.” “Every vote cast in this election carried the hope of a better future. I promise not to let you down,” he affirmed.
