Traditional priestesses in Tema Newtown have allegedly performed spiritual rituals to protest the rumoured appointment of a non-indigene as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.

A video circulating online shows the priestesses chanting incantations through the town, drawing public attention and sparking debate over tradition, identity, and political leadership.

Sources say the priestesses view the potential appointment of a non-native as a threat to traditional authority and a disregard for the community’s spiritual and cultural values.

While the government has yet to confirm the appointment, speculation has fueled tensions within the community.

Tema Newtown, a historic Ga-Dangme fishing community, continues to uphold its traditions amid urban development. The MCE role is seen as key to shaping local infrastructure, commerce, and welfare.

Meanwhile, the NDC Constituency Executive Committee of Tema Central has called for calm and urged all stakeholders to respect the constitutional process and maintain peace.
