In the heart of Accra, amid honking horns and eager movie-goers, a love story unfolded in the most extraordinary way. Picture this: it’s a balmy night at a ParknWatch event, where 100 cars are lined up, each waiting for the magic of cinema to come alive.
Here, a gentleman (let’s call him Mark) dropped to one knee, proposing to his girlfriend while surrounded by a chorus of supportive honks from strangers. It was a moment that captured the essence of love—and the evolution of cinema in Ghana.
This enchanting scene is not just a personal milestone; it’s a testament to the ambition of a visionary leader and his team who dare to redefine the movie experience in Africa. It truly is a team-effort when you see the energy with which all the workers serve eager movie watchers, with innovative spirits determined to reshape how we watch films.
So back to me, who’s now inspired to do an outdoor proposal. From a young age, I was captivated by movies. I spent countless Saturdays lost in cinematic worlds in every local cinema in Osu (Regal Cinema, Market Cinema, etc.), connecting with characters from Rambo to Jackie Chan.
But in Ghana, where cinema often means cramped seats and predictable offerings, our team and its leader (Ike) have disrupted the status quo with a bold new vision: ParknWatch.
Imagine enjoying a film from the comfort of your car, complete with blankets and a stunning night sky overhead as you enjoy a variety of super affordable, fresh, hot, spicy, sweet dishes complemented with cocktails and other drinks. It’s a concept that feels lovely and exciting, breathing new life into how we consume media.
Inspired by the principles of the Blue Ocean Strategy—an approach that encourages businesses to venture into untapped market spaces—this initiative is making waves across the proverbial centre of the world, Accra – Ghana.
What sets ParknWatch apart is its ability to merge entertainment with community spirit. Attendees do not only watch movies; they experience them in a setting that encourages laughter, connection and shared joy. The introduction of an innovative stand-up comedy session with a live audience would add another layer, making it a delightful outing for both young and old.
This innovative approach wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering dedication of a team that refuses to let setbacks dim their passion. I remember that fateful day in September 2023, when they planned to show a film at Ghana’s Independence Square, only for a storm to sweep through and disrupt everything. While many would have crumbled under such pressure, this team remained calm, smiling through the chaos—a true testament to their resilience and vision.
The ambition doesn’t stop at just movies. This visionary team is expanding the ParknWatch concept, incorporating experiences like outdoor games and bonfires out of Accra dubbed ‘Out of Town Vibes’ (coming to a town near you).
Imagine a night under the stars, sharing laughter with friends, while enjoying the best films the world has to offer with some hot night waakye, crispy yam and juicy pork, chicken wings, and so much more (oh my God, I’m salivating just typing these those yummy words).
With mobile payments booming in Ghana, the ParknWatch team is joining forces with IT Consortium (ITC), a leading IT company in the country whose mission is to provide innovative systems that bring obvious value to patrons.
Together, they are making it super easy for everyone to enjoy their services. Don’t bother coming with cash. With R-Pay (yes R-Pay), payments will be a breeze, offering options like USSD codes and cards for a hassle-free payment experience.
This is not just a business venture; it’s a movement. As the last Friday of every month rolls around, more people are discovering this unique way to enjoy cinema—making memories, forging connections and celebrating life.
So, if you’re looking for a weekend adventure that breaks the mould, look no further. Support this groundbreaking initiative that aims to redefine entertainment not only in Ghana, but across Africa.
Safe to say Africa also, because I know they are working with Namibia High Commission to expand ParknWatch, via their November in Namibia Campaign, into a festival on the Namib Desert. This team is not to be played with. They are ambitious and I love it!
As we continue to push boundaries and explore new horizons, remember that sometimes, all it takes is one person or a unique team with tenacity and a wild imagination to create something truly special.
In the end, like I started, love was in the air at that ParknWatch event (she said yes by the way), and the magic of cinema found a new home in the hearts of its viewers. Who knows? You might just find yourself inspired to chase your dreams too.
After all, every great story deserves to be told—let’s make sure it’s one worth watching. The next event is on Friday, 1st November at the Ghana Club, Ghana’s oldest members-only club since 1947, don’t miss it. Check out some videos here
I do miss Rambo, Jet Lee and the likes of Van Damme by the way. You never know, the Hype.Flix ParknWatch team might do a 90’s movies marathon. Catch you there.
