A Ugandan woman, Fortunate Kyarikunda, has been sentenced to six years in prison after refusing to marry a man who sponsored her education under an agreement that they would eventually wed.
The case, heard in Rukungiri District, stems from a lawsuit filed by Richard Tumwine, who claimed he financially supported Kyarikunda’s education with the understanding that they would marry after she completed her studies.
According to court records, the two met in 2015 while Kyarikunda was undertaking her teaching practice.

Their relationship reportedly developed over time, and by 2018, they reached a mutual agreement regarding marriage.
The dispute arose after Kyarikunda completed her education but declined to honour the purported agreement.
Tumwine subsequently took legal action, accusing her of breaching the terms of their understanding.
The court ultimately ruled in his favour, leading to Kyarikunda’s reported conviction and sentencing.
