Managing Director of Unique Insurance Ltd., Dr. Victor Obeng-Adiyiah, has disclosed that the company has staged a remarkable financial turnaround, growing from a negative equity position of GH₵2million in 2013 to a valuation of GH₵100million.

Addressing agents  at the company’s Annual Agency Awards Night in Kumasi, Dr. Obeng-Adiyiah recalled the difficult circumstances he inherited more than a decade ago.

“In 2013, the institution was broke.  The company was making serious losses and was worth negative GH₵2million. Today, we are worth GH₵100 million,” he said.

He attributed the recovery largely to the resilience and performance of the company’s agents across the country.

Notwithstanding the gains, the managing director sounded a note of caution, pointing to a significant decline in agency contribution to overall business volumes.

Dr. Obeng-Adiyiah explained that the company currently operates three distribution channels – agents, brokers and direct sales. According to him, some agents within the same industry generate over GH₵500,000 annually, which  demonstrates their commitment, focus and discipline.

He commended senior agents for their consistency but challenged younger agents to improve output.

“Kumasi Agency remains number one in performance; but in totality, we need to back up. Your income has a direct relationship with your production. If you want to earn more, you must produce more,” he stressed.

Dr. Obeng-Adiyiah further cautioned that technological change would soon redefine insurance distribution, particularly with the rise of Generation Z consumers.

He, therefore, urged agents to leverage digital platforms and prepare for a gradual shift away from purely traditional sales methods.

“Traditional ways of selling insurance will soon become obsolete. Let us diversify the way we do insurance. It is gradual, but it will catch up with you,” he said.

He revealed that the company’s head office has already gone paperless and encouraged agents to prioritise technology training, especially for younger successors within their agencies.

“We must teach the young ones the traditional way of selling insurance and also allow them to explore digital platforms,” he added.

Celebrating excellence

Head of Agency at Unique Insurance Ltd., Princey Ankrah, in her welcome address, described the awards night as a celebration of passion, dedication and excellence.

She encouraged agents to view the recognition as motivation to scale higher heights in the coming year.

“We have paused the hustle and gathered to do one thing – congratulate you. Over the past year, you have educated families, protected businesses and stood by clients during their most challenging times,” she said.

In all, 10 of the most hardworking agents and brokers received various awards on the night.

Alex Nii Sackeyfio emerged as the Overall Best Agent, taking home a fully funded trip to Dubai valued at GH₵30,000 while the Second Best Performing Agent award went to Isaac Akwasi Botchwey, who received a fully paid one-week stay at a resort of his choice, together with GH₵20,000 in spending money; and Daniel Kwaku Agyekum was adjudged Third Best Performing Agent, winning a one-week stay at a resort of his choice, plus GH₵15,000 in spending money.

The remaining seven awardees each received an all-purpose air fryer.
