ValueJet Airlines has launched scheduled passenger flights between Lagos and Accra, marking its entry into Ghana’s aviation market and expanding connectivity along one of West Africa’s busiest routes.

The airline becomes the 27th carrier operating at Kotoka International Airport, a development authorities say will deepen competition and support trade and mobility between Ghana and Nigeria. Officials view the move as aligned with government efforts to position Accra as a regional aviation hub.

“This direct flight by ValueJet from Lagos to Accra will enhance air connectivity, facilitate trade, and foster economic cooperation,” said Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, speaking on behalf of the Transport Minister.

Rising traffic is, however, increasing pressure on infrastructure. Government is repurposing Terminal 2 to handle both domestic and international flights, while planning a new concourse and multi-storey car park to ease congestion.

ValueJet will begin with three weekly flights, with plans to expand routes across Nigeria. Chief Executive Officer Capt. Omololu Majekodunmi said the Accra route was a strategic priority, adding that deeper airline collaboration across Africa “will be a game changer” for regional connectivity.

The expansion highlights both growing demand and the need for sustained infrastructure investment.
