Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Venezuela in a thrilling South American 2026 World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
Despite dominating possession, the five-time World Cup champions failed to secure all three points after Telasco Segovia’s second-half stunner cancelled out Raphinha’s brilliant opener.
Brazil struck first in the 43rd minute when Raphinha’s precise free-kick curled off the post and into the net, marking Brazil’s first World Cup qualifying free-kick goal since Roberto Carlos in 2005.
Venezuela, however, responded just 38 seconds into the second half as Segovia unleashed a powerful first-time strike from Jefferson Savarino’s assist, levelling the match.
Brazil missed a golden chance to reclaim the lead in the 62nd minute when Vinicius Jr won a penalty after a counterattack. However, his weak effort was saved by goalkeeper Rafael Romo, and the Real Madrid star failed to convert the rebound.
A late red card for Venezuela’s Alexander Gonzalez sent off for striking Gabriel Martinelli and Vinicius Jr, left the hosts with 10 men, but they held on.
Brazil remain third in the standings, five points behind leaders Argentina.
