With just days to Ghana’s 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, the nation is active in discussions about voter readiness.
The streets of Accra, filled with hawkers and everyday citizens, provide an overview of the varied sentiments as Ghanaians prepare to cast their ballots for the next leader of the country.
Opinions among voters are as diverse as the candidates on the ballot. Some express full readiness, and confidence in their choices, but, are unwilling to reveal who they will vote for.
“I’ve made my decision already, but I’ll only share it in the ballot box,” one voter stated with determination.
For many, the cost of living is a driving factor in their decision-making. Complaints about skyrocketing inflation, high-dollar exchange rates, and collapsed businesses dominate conversations.
“My business collapsed due to the rising dollar rate,” lamented one trader, vowing to vote for change in hopes of economic recovery.
However, not everyone is eager to participate. Some voters cite logistical challenges, such as their voting centers being too far away. Others express frustration over the lack of transportation support from candidates or political parties.
“Even if they provide transportation, we still have to pay for our return journey, and that’s not worth it,” explained a reluctant voter.
Meanwhile, a significant number of citizens say they would not vote at all, citing disillusionment with politicians and doubts about the election’s impact on their daily lives.
As the countdown to Election Day continues, it is clear that the mood on the ground is mixed.
While some are ready to make their voices heard, others remain hesitant, questioning whether their vote will bring the change they desire.
All eyes now turn to December 7, when the collective decision of Ghanaians will shape the country’s future.
