Ahead of their World Cup opener against Portugal in Doha, Ghana’s captain Andre thinks his country has what it takes to compete against strong opposition.

The Black Stars face former European champions on Thursday, despite the fact that many of their players will be making their major tournament debuts. In Group H, Ghana will also compete against former world champions Uruguay.

Both the core of the team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2018–19 as well as some of the players who helped Portugal win the European Championship in 2016 make up Portugal. Diego Godin and Luis Suarez, who have been playing with Edinson Cavani since 2014, are also available for Uruguay.

Nonetheless, Andre Ayew, one of the squad’s most experienced players, believes Black Stars are capable of competing with the big teams at the highest level.

“It’s true that before the game comes we’ll feel the stress, we’ll feel the pressure. It’s World Cup and we’re playing against Portugal. It’s normal. If you don’t feel it then you’re not human.

But it’s how you deal with it and I feel that the players that we have are playing at good clubs and they play in big games.

“It’s true that when you wear the Ghana jersey, it’s very heavy but I feel the boys are calm and ready to go for it.”

Ghana’s match against Portugal will be followed by a match against South Korea on November 28 before concluding their group stage schedule against Uruguay on December 2.
