We used to rehearse in church – The Compozers recall humble beginnings

The Compozers, the electrifying London-based quartet known for redefining live Afrobeats and high-energy performances, have opened up about their early days, revealing that their journey began not in studios or on big stages but in a church.

Speaking on The Chat on Channel One TV, the group made up of David Melodee, Nana Pokes, Charles, and Stephen Asamoah-Duah, reminisced about the relentless practice sessions that laid the foundation for their now-global success.

“From the start, we were just laying the foundation,” they shared.

“We used to rehearse every single week. It didn’t matter whether we had an upcoming show or not. We would go to Nana Poku’s church, and that’s where we’d rehearse all our songs including the Afrobeats… but God understood that,” they said with a laugh.

Steve chuckled as he recalled, “I tell you a funny story one day we were rehearsing in the church and Nana Poku’s mum, who is a pastor, came in and said, ‘People, this song is not edifying at all.’” The room burst into laughter at the memory.

David added a heartfelt note of gratitude: “If not for them, we wouldn’t be here. They gave us the opportunity.”
