We were sold out- Former SM member Ras Deportee reveals infiltration at anti-Galamsey protest

Call us

A former ardent member of Shatta Wale’s Shatta Movement[SM] and anti-galamsey activist Ras Deportee has spoken out about the disheartening events that unfolded during Democracy Hub’s protest against illegal mining.

In an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, Deportee revealed a shocking twist – their ranks were infiltrated.

“We were betrayed… People we thought were on our side, fighting to protect our environment, were actually feeding information to the authorities. That’s how they got us arrested.”

This revelation sheds light on the growing challenges faced by activists who dare to challenge galamsey’s destructive grip on Ghana’s land and water resources. The peaceful protest, intended to raise awareness about illegal mining’s devastating effects, swiftly turned into an ordeal for many participants.

Deportee alleges that the infiltrators played a crucial role in their capture, marking a sombre moment for those who risked their freedom to speak truth to power. “We ended up in prison….simply for fighting for our people, for our land.”

He went on to share the harsh realities of their incarceration. “It wasn’t easy. Prison conditions were harsh, but the deepest pain came from knowing we were betrayed by our comrades.”

Despite the hardship, Deportee confessed that prison only fueled his determination to fight against galamsey. Emerging from the experience. “This has taught me a valuable lesson – to be extremely cautious about who I trust,” he stated.

“Fighting for the people, for our land, is a cause I’ll never abandon,” he added
