The 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections have delivered a decisive victory to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), leaving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to grapple with an unexpected defeat. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as Napo, who served as the NPP’s running mate, has acknowledged the party’s disappointing loss and called for a period of “honest introspection and reflection.”
In a statement issued on December 11, Napo emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the Ghanaian people. “The 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections resulted in a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This was not the outcome we, in the NPP, envisaged; but we respect the verdict of the Ghanaian people. To Ghanaians, we have heard you clearly, and with humility we accept. We will work with you to get it right,” he stated.
Expressing gratitude, Napo thanked God for the opportunity to serve both his party and the nation. He also extended his appreciation to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, for selecting him as running mate, as well as the NPP leadership and supporters for their unwavering confidence in the ticket.
Reflecting on the loss, Napo disclosed that he has already held extensive discussions with Dr. Bawumia to analyze the election results. He assured Ghanaians that, in due time, the party would delve deeper into understanding the causes of the defeat.
Despite the setback, Napo remains optimistic about the NPP’s future. “As we go into a period of honest introspection and reflection on this electoral verdict, I am confident that we will bounce back to win the trust, confidence, support, and affection of Ghanaians,” he remarked.
