Recent commentary by the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Constituency, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, urging all Muslims to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as president of the Republic of Ghana in the December 2024 polls because he is a Muslim, has drawn the ire of some sections of the public, particularly the Muslim communities in Koforidua.
The unpopular statement by the MP did not resonate well with the Koforidua Zongo Community who described it as an attack on their integrity aimed at politicking amid the numerous socio-economic challenges confronting Muslims in the Zongo communities.
The Koforidua Zongo Caucus, led by Mr. Amuzu Selassie, also the NDC Constituency Chairman for New Juaben South, in a press conference revealed that the comment by the NPP legislator was mere propaganda with the tendency of threatening the peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims in the Constituency.
According to Chairman Amuzu Selassie, Muslims are well informed about the happenings in the Constituency and the country at large hence they need no one to tell them who they should vote for in the 2024 elections.
He reiterated, “Muslim children also deserve scholarships and we want development in our communities therefore we will vote according to track record and credibility, not anybody’s religious affiliation.”
“MP Hon. Okyere Baafi should talk about our bad roads and tell us what he and Dr. Bawumia have done for the Muslim Communities regarding socio-economic development,” Chairman Amuzu queried.
“The Vice President that the MP is fighting for is running away from his track record concerning arresting the dollar and keeping the key in the IGP pocket. Let it be known to the MP that we, the Zongo Communities, will vote according to track record and credibility,” he replied the MP.
Some elders and youth in the Koforidua Zongo also expressed their displeasure and asked Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi to apologize to all Muslims for the unsavory comment made during the Eid al-Fitr celebration.
