…but uncovering human abilities undefined by educational systems?

For centuries, we have followed the same playbook when it comes to work: gain intelligence through education, refine it through practice, and then use it as leverage to continuously produce value. Formal education usually takes a minimum of 20 years, plus some added years for advanced degrees. Informal education typically takes less time.
As humanity, we invest time, energy, and money to develop our ability to create value through some type of intelligence. Over time, we have built formal education systems designed to deliver this outcome and also recognize professional-grade intelligence validated through examinations and certificates.
Interestingly, in my observations of work, what truly distinguishes professional growth, excellence, and becoming an apex value creator across industries is not just formal education, but formal education combined with an individual’s set of what I call human superpowers.
Over my 20+ years of formal work life, both as an employee and an employer, I have seen these human superpowers consistently on display in value creation and service to humanity. Most of these abilities are never formally documented or listed on CVs, yet colleagues and leaders recognize them and assign roles, tasks, and leadership opportunities based on them.
So, what are Human Superpowers?
In my definition, Human Superpowers are innate abilities—unique in individuals—and highly valuable in specific situations. While I may not always have the perfect language to define them, I can point us toward recognizing them through the examples below:
- Ability to care (passion)
- Ability to coordinate
- Ability to multitask
- Curiosity
- Pattern recognition
- Intuition
- Goal-oriented thinking
- Hyperfocus
- Ability to see details (minutiae)
- Courage
- Innovativeness & Problem-solving ability
- Ability to influence
- Ability to lighten moods and environments
- Ability to connect well with people
- Conflict navigation and resolution
- Trust-building
- Active listening and emotional intelligence
- Social awareness
- Spotting opportunities
- Composure during crises and chaos
- Storytelling
- Confidence
- Persuasiveness
- Ability to observe and notice important details
- Reliability
- Agility
- Originality
- Ability to turn opportunities into money
- Mentorship and guidance
- Drive/initiative
These are just a few examples of human superpowers that contribute daily to success across facets of value creation.
Why education never fully defines them
Traditional education systems were built for a different era—one that prioritized standardization, predictability, and measurable outputs. In many ways, this is exactly why AI can now replicate much of what education produces, often with greater speed and efficiency.
However, human superpowers are difficult to standardize, hard to test in exams, and highly context-dependent. As a result, they have often been labelled as “soft skills” and treated as secondary to technical knowledge. In reality, they are often the primary drivers of real-world success.
As leaders and professionals, I offer you this challenge: reflect on your organizations and team’s successes over the years and identify as many of these human superpowers as you can that contributed to those outcomes.
Why are human superpowers good news in the AI era?
AI cannot fully replace people. While some tasks and forms of value creation will be replaced, the value humans bring to delivering meaningful outcomes has always gone beyond what we can fully define, measure, or even comprehend.
AI is ushering in a new era—one that enables us to better leverage human superpowers to enhance the value we create and the service we provide to one another. Yes, some jobs will be lost, and some industries may become obsolete. But we will also create new jobs and innovate new offerings, driven by our unique human superpowers combined with the effective use of artificial intelligence for our insatiable need for better lifestyles.
