Technical advisor Winfried Schäfer has reaffirmed his commitment to helping the Black Stars re-establish themselves among Africa’s elite football nations.

The experienced German coach was appointed following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Since joining the technical team, Schäfer has played a role in guiding the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking in an interview with Medeama FM, Schäfer disclosed that he was approached by the Ghana Football Association president after the AFCON setback. He was tasked with supporting the team’s push for World Cup qualification and restoring confidence within the squad.

Schäfer expressed delight at the opportunity, describing Ghana as a “big name” in African football and pledging to help the team reclaim its top status on the continent. The Black Stars are expected to regroup in March for international friendlies against Austria and Germany as part of their World Cup preparations.
