Reports are swirling that Morocco has withdrawn from hosting the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), originally set for March 19 to April 3.

The development leaves the tournament’s future in limbo, with no official word yet from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirming the pullout or a new venue.

South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, fueled the speculation on Sunday, February 1, 2026, by announcing at the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards that her country would step in as the new host.

The bold claim sparked excitement among fans and stakeholders eager for continuity in women’s football on the continent. However, Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie quickly moved to clarify the situation.

In a statement released shortly after Mabe’s remarks, McKenzie debunked any finalized deal, stressing that no official decision has been made by the ministry to host the event.

McKenzie reiterated Morocco’s status as the designated host, noting South Africa’s readiness to assist CAF if needed.

“South Africa has expressed its willingness to support the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if required, should alternative hosting arrangements for the 2026 WAFCON become necessary,” the statement read.

These talks reflect ongoing CAF discussions on contingencies, but McKenzie emphasized that no relocation process has been triggered.

As anticipation builds for next month’s kickoff, all eyes remain on CAF for an official update to settle the hosting drama.
