Work loyally and diligently with patriotic courage – Mahama tells incoming Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs & Chief of Staff of GAF

President John Dramani Mahama has wished the new Chiefs of the Ghana Armed Forces, appointed by the President in consultation with the Council of State, a successful tenure.

Mr Mahama asked them to work loyally and diligently with patriotic courage as a united team cooperating to protect and defend Ghana.

Mr Mahama said this hwne he, per advice from the Armed Forces Council, effective today Monday 24th March 2025 promoted the incoming Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, and the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

These promotions in advance of the final handing over by the outgoing administration of the Ghana Armed Forces usher in the following Commissioned Officers:

Major General William Agyapong – Chief of The Defence Staff.

Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu-Chief of Army Staff. Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing-Chief of Naval Staff.

Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong-Chief of Air Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai – Chief of Staff

A statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu said that “The President wishes the new Chiefs of the Ghana Armed Forces-appointed by the President in consultation with the Council of State a successful tenure as they work loyally and diligently with patriotic courage as a united team cooperating to protect and defend our dear nation, Ghana.”

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has today, March 24, 2025, inaugurated the newly constituted Armed Forces Council to oversee the administration and strategic direction of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Armed Forces Council is responsible for advising the President on matters relating to defence policy, military administration, and operational readiness.

The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, will serve as Chairperson of the Council.

Other members of the Council include:

  1. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Member
  2. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa – Member
  3. Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka – Member
  4. Mr. Daniel Addo – Member
  5. Mr. Fuseini Iddrisu – Member
  6. Ms. Nancy Dakwa Ampofo – Member

The inauguration of the Council is expected to enhance defence governance and improve coordination between the government and the Ghana Armed Forces.
