The World Food Programme (WFP) has donated 55 tablets to the University for Development Studies (UDS) to support data collection and enhance knowledge to address food security.
The tablets were given to the Directorate of Community Relations and Outreach Programmes at UDS, where they will be used to gather crucial information on food security issues within the catchment area of the UDS.
The Directorate of Community Relations of the UDS is responsible for rolling-out its community-technical-interface programme, which includes the Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP).
The Directorate is also in charge of the Community Based Education and Service (COBES) programme and Teaching Practice. The donation therefore comes at a critical time when food insecurity is a growing concern in Ghana. With the help of these tablets, researchers at UDS will be able to collect and process data more efficiently, ultimately leading to better strategies for addressing food security challenges.
The Vice Chancellor of the UDS, Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, commended the WFP for the support, saying the donation falls in line with the university’s vision of a centre of excellence for research, skills and moral development, and community service.
“We are extremely grateful to the World Food Programme for their generous donation, these tablets will greatly enhance our ability to gather accurate and timely data, which is essential for developing effective solutions to food insecurity in our region.”
The WFP has a long history of supporting initiatives that aim to improve food security and alleviate hunger around the world. The organiser has a partnership agreement with the UDS to support the institution to attain its mandate.
The Country Director of World Food Programme (WFP), Barbara Clemens, on her part, assured the UDS of the continued support of the organisation. She expressed the hope that the tablets would help the University achieve its goals.
“The provision of these tablets is part of our efforts to build the capabilities of institutions using technology.”
