World Series 2026: History made as Ghana’s para swimmers set for first major competition

Two Ghanaian para swimmers, Promise Atsu and Bryan Baffour, have jetted off to Australia for the World Series 2026.

The duo departed Ghana on Tuesday evening for the competition, slated for February 20–22 at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

Promise and Bryan will undergo international classification and compete in the event, which serves as a qualifying pathway toward the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Both athletes will compete in the 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, and 100m Breaststroke.

It is the first time Ghana will be represented at a major competition in para swimming.

The trip, which is understood to be funded by the Ghana Olympic Committee, marks a significant milestone for the Para Swimming Association, headed by Farida Iddriss, who became president in May 2025.

In a statement released, the National Paralympic Committee said: “Madam Farida Idriss, President of the Ghana Para Swimming Association, played a critical role in ensuring that these young para swimmers secured this life-changing opportunity.

“Her leadership, advocacy, and determination have opened new doors for para swimming development in Ghana.

“As the athletes prepare to compete in Australia, Ghana proudly stands behind them and hopes they will achieve qualification and continue to inspire a new generation of para swimmers across the country.”
