Former Real Madrid and Liverpool star Xabi Alonso is reportedly the leading candidate to become Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager for the upcoming season.
The Spaniard, who currently manages Bayer Leverkusen, has gained significant attention for his impressive management skills in Germany.
Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that Alonso is the frontrunner for the job, with Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot also a contender. However, Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly not ready to commit until Spurs have a new sporting director in place.
The news comes after it was revealed that former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is unlikely to return to the club, with rumours suggesting he may take over at Chelsea instead.
Tottenham are currently without a permanent manager following the sacking of Antonio Conte, and later parting ways with Cristian Stellini, with Ryan Mason serving as interim coach for the remainder of the season.
Alonso, 41, has only been in management for a short time, having taken over at Bayer Leverkusen in December 2022. However, he has quickly established himself as a promising young manager, with the club currently in sixth place in the Bundesliga.
Alonso is considered one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, having won numerous titles with Real Madrid and Liverpool, as well as the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain.
