Yinson Production West Africa has inaugurated an ultra-modern science laboratory for the Salvation Army Basic School at Dixcove in the Ahanta West Municipality to provide pupils with practical science education.
The facility will support teaching of Integrated Science, including Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and serve as a shared Resource Centre for neighbouring schools.
George Effah, the Ahanta West Municipal Director of Education, at the ceremony, said science education is central to national development.
“Science is practical and experimental. Learners must experiment, observe and apply what they are taught,” he said.
He pointed out that pupils in many schools lack practical exposure, which affects their performance and understanding of science subjects.
The laboratory, he explained, will bridge the gap between theory and practice and encourage interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers.
He said practical learning develops analytical skills, critical thinking and problem-solving. Early exposure to experiments can motivate students to pursue science-related courses at higher levels of education.
Mr. Effah said the Municipal Education Directorate will post a trained Science teacher to manage the laboratory and coordinate lessons.
He added that monitoring and supervision will ensure proper use and maintenance of the facility.
Edward Mensah, Local Content and Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Yinson Ghana, said the project was informed by the company’s annual STEM programme for girls.
He explained that many students had never used laboratory equipment, despite being examined on practical topics.
“Students learn better when they can touch and test what they are taught,” he said.
According to him, the project aligns with Yinson’s long-term goal of supporting education and community development.
“This lab, supports our commitment to human capital development and sustainable community initiatives to promote science education”, he added.
Ms. Judith Okonta, Managing Director of Yinson Operations and Production West Africa, said the laboratory shows the company’s commitment to investing in young people.
She said the facility will help produce skilled professionals and improve academic outcomes in science subjects.
The Ahanta West Municipal Chief Executive, Ebenezer Aidoo, in a speech read for him, commended Yinson for the initiative and said the laboratory would strengthen human capital development.
Alfred Ayeh, the Western Regional Manager of the Petroleum Commission, urged school authorities to maintain the facility to ensure sustainability.
Headmistress of the Salvation Army Basic School, Madam Cecilia Amoo, thanked Yinson and said the school would ensure the laboratory is properly used.
“With the science laboratory in operation, pupils in Dixcove and neighbouring communities now have access to practical Science lessons, which will improve academic outcomes and encourage interest in STEM fields,” she said.
