Argentina booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in a thrilling quarter-final encounter.

The reigning world champions made a bright start and took the lead in the 10th minute through Alexis Mac Allister, who gave Argentina the advantage with a header from Messi’s corner kick.

Switzerland fought back in the second half and restored parity in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye found the back of the net after a sweet build-up to send the game into extra time.

In 72nd minute, Swiss striker Breel Embolo was sent off after being booked for simulation following an incident that involved him and Paredes. He was yellow carded for that and it resulted into a red card as he had already gone into the referee’s book in the 44th minute.

The Albiceleste stepped up their intensity in the additional 30 minutes as Julian Alvarez fired them back in front with a sumptuous curler before Lautaro Martinez added a third goal to seal victory for Lionel Scaloni’s side.

The Albiceleste controlled the closing stages after Martinez’s strike, ensuring there would be no late comeback from the Swiss as they secured another place in the last four of the tournament.

Argentina will now take on England in the semi-finals on Wednesday, July 15, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.
