Belgium produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling round of 32 clash at Lumen Field, booking their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Teranga Lions made a bright start and deservedly took the lead through Habib Diarra before halftime. Senegal continued their impressive display after the break, with Ismaila Sarr doubling the advantage to put the African side firmly in control.
Belgium looked destined for elimination but mounted a remarkable late fightback. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans struck just three minutes later to level the score at 2-2 and force extra time.
With both teams pushing for a winner, the match appeared to be heading towards penalties until Belgium were awarded a spot-kick in extra time.
Tielemans calmly converted the penalty to complete an incredible turnaround, sealing a 3-2 victory and sending the Red Devils through to the Round of 16.
The heartbreaking defeat brings Senegal’s World Cup campaign to an end after letting a two-goal lead slip, while Belgium advance to the next stage, where they will discover their round of 16 opponents after the remaining round of 32 fixtures.
