Canada booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa at SoFi Stadium.

The Round of 32 contest looked destined for extra time as both sides battled hard but failed to find a breakthrough during regulation time.

South Africa produced a disciplined display and matched the tournament co-hosts for much of the game, frustrating Canada’s attacking players with a resilient defensive performance.

However, heartbreak struck for Bafana Bafana deep into stoppage time when experienced midfielder Stephen Eustaquio unleashed a superb strike into the bottom corner to finally break the deadlock and hand Canada the victory.

The late goal secured Canada’s first-ever place in the Round of 16 of a FIFA World Cup, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.

For South Africa, it was a cruel end to an impressive campaign. After becoming just the second African nation to reach the Round of 32 at the 2026 tournament, they exited despite an outstanding performance against the hosts.

Bafana Bafana can nevertheless leave the competition with pride after making history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time, while Canada continue their dream run with a place in the last 16.
