Cape Verde, who impressed on their World Cup debut by holding Spain, once again showed their fighting spirit against the two-time champions.
The Blue Sharks took a surprise lead in the 21st minute when midfielder Kevin Lenini scored their first-ever World Cup goal with a stunning free-kick.
Uruguay, also responded strongly before half-time. Maximilian Araujo and Augustine Canobbio scored two late first-half goals to turn the score around and give the Sky Blues a 2-1 lead at the break.
However, Cape Verde refused to give up. Substitute Hélio Varela made an instant impact, equalising just three minutes after coming on in the 61st minute to restore parity.
The result marks another impressive achievement for the debutants, who have now earned points against two strong sides.
Uruguay will face Spain in their final group game on June 27, while Cape Verde take on Saudi Arabia on the same day.
