The United States secured their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 2-0 in a Group C clash at Lumen Field.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side delivered another disciplined performance to record their second consecutive victory of the tournament and become the second nation to qualify for the knockout rounds after Mexico.
The match was closely contested for long periods, with Australia battling hard to keep the Americans at bay.
However, the breakthrough came through an own goal by Cameron Burgess in just eleven minutes from kickoff, handing the Yanks a crucial advantage and putting them in control of the contest.
The United States doubled their lead later in the game when Villarreal full-back Alexander Freeman found the back of the net on the stroke of half-time to put the game to bed.
Australia pushed for a way back into the match but struggled to break down a well-organised American defence as the hosts comfortably saw out the victory.
The result guarantees the United States a place in the next round and strengthens their credentials as one of the tournament’s early contenders.
Despite the defeat, the Socceroos remain firmly in the race for qualification after winning their opening match against Turkey and will now need a positive result against Paraguay on June 26 to secure their passage to the knockout phase.
The United States will conclude their Group C campaign against Turkey on the same day, looking to maintain their perfect record heading into the last 32.
