More than 4,000 energy-efficient cookstoves have been procured for distribution under the Clean Cooking Activities programme, aimed at reducing household dependence on firewood and charcoal while supporting climate resilience and clean energy adoption.
The improved cookstoves, produced by German firm Atmosfair and implemented by Ghana Beyond Karbon in partnership with Eco Green Hub, are designed to reduce fuelwood consumption by between 40 and 60 percent compared with traditional three-stone fires and inefficient stoves. The technology also lowers greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide and black carbon, while easing pressure on forests and natural vegetation.
The initiative seeks to reduce indoor air pollution, improve the health of women and children – who are most exposed to cooking smoke – and contribute to climate change mitigation through lower emissions and reduced deforestation.
Distribution is underway in communities across the Upper West, Northern, Volta and Oti Regions, with organised women’s groups and Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) beneficiaries among the primary targets.
Executive Director-Eco Green Hub Foster Gomashie said many households, particularly in northern Ghana, spend a significant share of their income on charcoal and firewood. He noted that women and children bear the greatest health burden from indoor air pollution, making access to cleaner cooking technologies essential for household wellbeing and climate resilience.
Mr. Gomashie added that the programme is expected to reduce the felling of economically valuable trees, including shea trees which support the livelihoods of thousands of women engaged in shea picking and processing.
He further observed that traditional biomass stoves release black carbon through incomplete combustion, contributing to environmental degradation and climate change. According to him, Eco Green Hub continues working with communities, traditional authorities and other stakeholders to promote sustainable cooking practices and raise awareness of the environmental and economic benefits from clean cooking technologies.
