A life of service: Why Hackman Owusu-Agyemang still inspires

When the story of modern Ghanaian public service is told, the name Hon. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang will occupy a distinguished place. Diplomat, agricultural economist, parliamentarian, minister of state, party elder, devoted Catholic, and proud APSUnian, his journey has been defined by an unwavering commitment to service, integrity, and nation-building.

For many old students of St. Augustine’s College (APSUnians), however, Hackman is not merely a public figure. He is one of their own—an APSU ‘61 alumnus who has consistently demonstrated what it means to give back to one’s alma mater and community.

A distinguished son of St. Augustine’s

Born in Koforidua in 1941, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang received his secondary education at St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast before proceeding to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He later pursued postgraduate studies in agricultural planning and agricultural economics in the Netherlands and at the University of London, laying the foundation for a remarkable international career.

His professional journey took him to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, where he served in various senior capacities across Africa, the Caribbean, and South America. Rising through the ranks with distinction, he attained the position of Chief of Regional Bureau for Africa at the age of 49—a milestone that reflected both his exceptional expertise and the international community’s confidence in his leadership. Those who worked with him remember a thoughtful strategist with a deep understanding of agriculture, development, and international cooperation.

From diplomacy to national leadership

Upon returning to Ghanaian politics, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang served four terms as Member of Parliament for New Juaben North and held several key ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for the Interior, and Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing during the administration of President John Agyekum Kufuor. His tenure was marked by diligence, calm leadership, and a reputation for intellectual rigour.

“Public office is a trust,” he has often implied through his actions and public engagements, emphasising that leadership must ultimately serve the people.

Today, he continues to offer guidance as Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s Council of Elders, a role that reflects the respect he commands across political and social circles.

Honoured by KNUST

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Ghana, the international community, and his alma mater, KNUST recently honoured him with an Honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). The university cited his selfless service, his support for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and his contributions to the KNUST Alumni Endowment Fund.

The honour came as no surprise to those who know him. Throughout his career, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang has remained deeply connected to educational institutions that shaped his life. He recently pledged significant financial support to KNUST’s development initiatives, reinforcing his belief that alumni have a responsibility to invest in the future of their institutions.

A generous APSUnian

Within the APSU fraternity, Hackman is celebrated not only for his achievements but also for his generosity. When the St. Augustine’s College Endowment Fund was launched a few years ago, he made a remarkable contribution of US$100,000 and pledged to do even more in support of the school’s development.

He frequently speaks about the profound impact St. Augustine’s College has had on his life and career.

“St. Augustine’s gave me the discipline, values, and confidence that have guided me throughout my life,” he has often told fellow APSUnians.

His commitment goes beyond financial support. He has actively participated in APSU activities over the years and is even remembered for joining an APSU walk—an illustration of his willingness to engage with old students at every level.

Faith, family, and resilience

A staunch Catholic, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang’s faith has remained a constant anchor throughout his life. Friends and colleagues describe him as a man of quiet devotion whose public service has always been informed by strong moral principles. His family’s connection to St. Augustine’s College also continues through his sons, who are themselves APSUnians.

Married for 54 years, he shared his life with his beloved wife, Comfort Owusu-Agyemang, until her passing in 2022—a painful loss that deeply moved all who knew them. The APSU community stood with him during that difficult period, with a delegation of executives and members visiting to offer condolences and later attending the funeral in large numbers. The gesture reflected the deep affection and respect that exists between him and the APSU fraternity.

Chairing a special celebration

It is therefore fitting that Hon. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang has been chosen to chair the St. Augustine’s College 97th Anniversary & Project Launch, scheduled for Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Ambassador Ballroom of the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra, starting at 5:30 p.m. The event is being hosted by the APSU 2002 year group.

For the organisers, his selection symbolises continuity between generations of APSUnians and highlights the values of service, excellence, and loyalty that the college seeks to nurture.
