Accountability forum on journalists safety to be held on Friday December 22

The annual accountability forum of stakeholders on the safety of journalists is expected to take place on Friday, December 22, 2023 in Accra. 

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who announced this at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Media Capacity Enhancement Programme says the forum will enable state actors account for the status of  investigations and alleged assault on journalists.

Organisations expected at the forum include the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Armed Forces, and the Judicial Service, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), National Media Commission (NMC), Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) and Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA).

“On Friday December 22nd the Police CID, the armed forces and the Judicial Service will join us for the maiden accountability forum of the mechanism to assess how we have handled the incidents that have occurred this year and in recent years,” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said.

The accountability forum which is part of Ghana’s response to recent attacks on media is a key feature of the Coordinated Mechanism for the Safety of Journalists.

The outcome of the forum is expected to assist in preparing Ghana’s annual report on safety of journalists and influence future responses to the phenomenon.
