The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD), in collaboration with the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, have taken proactive measures to address flooding in Accra.

Through this initiative, multi-purpose drones have been distributed to seventeen beneficiary Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies (MMDAs) participating in the GARID Project. The aim is to bolster flood mitigation efforts within the region.

Highlighting the significance of this endeavor, the Ministry emphasizes that the drones are intended to assist the beneficiary Assemblies in identifying the root causes of flooding within their respective jurisdictions.

The Coordinator of the GARID Project, Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo in an interview with the media underlines the transformative potential of this initiative stressing that the distribution of drones signifies a pivotal step towards enhancing the capacity of the beneficiary Assemblies and these drones will enable them to effectively monitor water body buffers to prevent encroachment, conduct surveillance of solid waste hotspots, and strengthen overall development control measures.

Furthermore, Dr. Ohene Sarfo issues a stern reminder to the beneficiary Assemblies regarding the appropriate use of the drones emphasizing that the drones are not to be utilized for social gatherings or any unauthorized purposes so any misuse of the drones will result in accountability measures, as stipulated by the specific guidelines governing their use.

The Geographic Information Systems and Informatics Specialist for the GARID Project, Mr. Bernard Makafui Agbelengior elaborates on the distinctive features of the drones. He highlights that these drones are tailored for specialized tasks, differing significantly from those typically employed for recreational purposes or social gatherings.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma Central and Dean of the Greater Accra Municipal Chief Executives, Hon George Cyril Bray, on behalf of the Assemblies expressed their gratitude for the support extended by the Ministry, reaffirming the commitment of the beneficiary Assemblies. He assures that they will leverage the drones effectively to advance the objectives of the GARID Project.
