The National Sports Authority (NSA) says work is continuing at the Accra Sports Stadium to maintain and improve the facility ahead of a busy schedule of international matches.
The venue has been approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international fixtures and is set to serve as the home ground for both Niger and Somalia in upcoming matches.
Ghana’s Black Stars will also return to the stadium for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, hosting Gambia in Accra three days after facing Cte d’Ivoire in Bouak in their opening Group C fixture.
Speaking to 3Sports, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah said preserving the stadium’s standards remains a key priority, describing it as Ghana’s only venue currently cleared to host FIFA Category A matches.
“Accra Sports Stadium is currently the only approved venue for FIFA Category A matches. The qualifiers are one. We finished the World Cup qualifiers last year successfully,” he said.
Ampofo Ankrah acknowledged that although the stadium has met the required standards, further investment is needed to ensure it remains fit for purpose.
He noted that renovation and maintenance works are ongoing, while stressing that improvements are also required at sporting facilities across the country.
“But there’s a lot of work that still needs to be done, not just here at the Accra Sports Stadium but across the regions, but here major works will be done, and that is the focus for the future,” he added.
“Currently, additional works that need to be done to keep the stadium at its standard and also upgrade it for these upcoming games are ongoing.”
With the AFCON qualifiers set to begin later this month, preparations have intensified as the NSA seeks to ensure the stadium is ready to host both Ghana’s fixtures and other international assignments.
