AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: I'm tired of referees not doing a good job in Africa – Carlos Queiroz

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has criticised refereeing standards in Africa and called for the introduction of VAR after the Black Stars 2-0 defeat to Cte dIvoire.The Portuguese coach was particularly unhappy with the decision to award the hosts a penalty in the second half of Thursdays 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Bouak.Malick Yalcouy went down inside the box following a challenge from Fatawu Issahaku, prompting referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan to point to the spot.Franck Kessi converted the resulting penalty in the 56th minute to double Cte dIvoires advantage after Yalcouy had opened the scoring in the first half.Queiroz described the penalty as a complete joke and questioned why VAR is not available at the continental level.The former Iran and Colombia coach said he was frustrated by recurring refereeing controversies in African football and believes technology could help improve decision-making.Why we don’t have VAR in Africa? I was born in Mozambique, I grew up here, I’m tired of these situations, of these referees that don’t do a good job.Ghana struggled to mount a comeback after conceding the second goal, with Queiroz introducing three attacking players in the 64th minute.Augustine Boakye, Benjamin Tetteh and Felix Afena-Gyan helped create more attacking urgency, but Ghana failed to score.The defeat leaves the Black Stars bottom of Group C before their September 29 clash with The Gambia in Accra.
