Akon has sparked debate after saying men are “not built to be committed” and are naturally inclined to have multiple partners.

In an interview with The Shade Room, the Senegalese-American singer claimed male behaviour is driven by biology rather than choice. “Men aren’t committed. We’re not built to be committed,” he said, adding that men are “natural breeders by nature” and therefore not designed to stay with one partner.

He distinguished between commitment and what he described as faithfulness, arguing that emotional loyalty can still exist even in non-monogamous relationships. “But faithfulness is something totally different,” he said, suggesting a man could remain devoted to a primary partner while being involved with others.

Akon also used a hypothetical example to explain his view, saying a man might still prioritise his main relationship despite infidelity, and claiming many men would continue to “fight for that one” partner. He added that relationship breakdowns are often linked to involvement with other women.

The remarks come amid ongoing attention on his personal life. In September 2025, his wife filed for divorce after 28 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Badara Thiam, has previously spoken openly about polygamy and confirmed he is the father of nine children.
