The government has announced the successful restoration of the fourth power generation unit at the Akosombo Dam, marking a major step toward stabilising Ghana’s electricity supply following recent disruptions.

The update was shared by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, in a Facebook post on April 28, 2026.

According to the minister, the fourth unit was brought back into operation at 9:09 pm, just hours after the third unit had also been successfully restored.

“At 9:09pm, the fourth unit at Akosombo Dam was successfully brought into operation, an encouraging step that strengthens power generation and reflects the dedication and expertise of the team behind the effort,” he stated.

The progress comes in the wake of a fire outbreak at the Akosombo substation, which damaged the control room and resulted in the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid. The incident led to supply instability and intermittent outages across parts of the country.

Authorities say the phased restoration of the affected generation units is expected to significantly improve output and enhance the reliability of the power system.
