The funeral of Ghanaian author and former education minister Ama Ata Aidoo at the forecourt of the State House in Accra on Thursday, July 13,2023 was a star-studded affair, with dignitaries from all over the world in attendance.
But it was the moment when current President Akufo-Addo and former President John Mahama joined the mourners in song that truly took people’s breath away.
The two men, who have been known to have their political differences, put aside their differences to sing the closing hymn in honor of Aidoo. The hymn, “I Will Praise My Maker” is song that is often sung at funerals.
In addition to their singing, Akufo-Addo and Mahama also gave speeches at the funeral. In an emotional tribute, Akufo-Addo acknowledged the late iconic author’s unparalleled talent and described her as a literary icon whose words resonated with readers around the globe.
The President added that Ghanaians and the world will Ama Ata Aidoo not only for her literary brilliance but also for her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to advancing African literature and culture.
Ama Ata Aidoo, a Ghanaian author, playwright, and educator, died on May 31, 2023, at the age of 81. Her funeral was a fitting tribute to a great woman who made significant contributions to Ghanaian culture and society.
